UNDERGROUND CONCRETE VAULT DESIGN 1

HI,

I relatively new to designing vaults and dealt mostly with building above ground.

Does anyone recommend any good standards for the design of the vaults for uplift, active and at rest pressure and what is a conservative seismic load on the tank??

I have designed a lot of underground stormwater concrete storage tanks over the years, and in just about all of the projects, have had the benefit of a geotechnical report to answer those questions.

I do not know the size of your vault or vaults, but would highly recommend engaging the services of a geotech if it is a detention tank.

msquared has the best advice, but if you're stuck without a Geotechnical Report, ASTM C857 "Minimum Structural Design Loading for Underground Precast Concrete Utility Structures" gives some good conservative recommendations, at least on some of your questions.

Check buoyancy if you're in an area with a high groundwater table.

FYI, the Geotech should also be able to tell you the level of the highest groudwater elevation.

If you have a decent depth of soil over the tank, uplift should not be a factor, but it still needs to be checked.
