Hello,
Could you please advise if there is NDT tool which can detect wall loss in underground pipe ( material is CS and in service). Pipe is inside sleeve which located under transport road.

many thanks,

Thank you SnTMan,
apart UT pigging tool, is there any option to check the wall thickness, like long range UT but which will give exact measurement of remaining wall thickness?

Thanks.

Long range UT can work, but has decreasing accuracy with length and also any weld limits information beyond them.

How big pipe?
Wall thickness?
Fluid inside?
how long?
Access to inside or outside of pipe?
How "exact"?

Or just isolate it and pressure test it.

Dear LittleInch, thanks for response.
How big pipe? 20"
Wall thickness? 9.5mm
Fluid inside? residue
how long? aprox. 10meter
Access to inside or outside of pipe? outside ( pipe is in service Temperature 95C)

thanks,

Hi Dhurjati Sen,

thanks for response. No, personally I am not aware about Perason Survey.
however, after googleing I understood (if correct) that the users should ensure that the pipelines are backfilled and the surrounding soil is compact and contains some moisture. in my case I am traying to measure the pipe which is inside the sleeve (casing), which is not contact with soil. (contacts with air).
does it work in that case?
please advise

Didn't you think of it during the design?

Sorry Nalsur,

I missed the sleeve.
Pearson survey would tell you about the coating defects of the sleeve.
However, if the sleeve is all right, the pipe should be fine.
Can you ensure the integrity of the end rings by LPI? This requires digging at the ends and subsequent power brushing.
If yes, then your pipe is externally ok.

Regards.

?If you're worried about it for 10m of pipe just program its replacement into the next turnaround.

You'll use more money finding out if its ok than it costs to replace it.

Long range UT will work for 10m if there are no big changes in section or a lot of welds, but think about the cost and what happens if it says there are issues.

Dear LiitleInch,

It seems they can't take a s/d.
