Can someone recommend good reference books or materials for underpinning design? Specifically, I'm looking for technical underpinning design guidelines for underpinning in relation to earth retention (soldier pile/lagging, etc.).

There are some general books in addition to the references Bridgebuster gives.

ASCE Geotechnical Special Publication #74
Earth Retention Systems Handbook by Macnab.

I find the FHWA ones most useful, but there are not really books encompassing theory/design as there are for concrete and steel. Practice varies quite a bit around the country and is more learned by experience (working with others already in the know) than from books.
