Hello everyone,

I am curious for S235JR which is an equivalent to ASTM A36, can i assign a UNS number such as UNS K02600 which is UNS for ASTM A36? Why doesn't EN and GB adopt UNS?

Why, why, why?
The Europeans agreed to adopt UNS about 30 years ago in return for listing some European alloys and developing more joint specifications.
But it has just never happened.
Bureaucracy is the only reason that I can think of.

You could list K20600, but does S235JR actually comply with that chemistry?
That is all UNS specifies, chemistry.
Properties are all in materials specifications.

I reached out to ASTM today and of course they just said to check the latest UNS book released by SAE/ASTM. I agree with you about these materials not being the same “chemically”. I am trying to use UNS to qualify welding materials to ASME and AWS. These welding codes allow UNS to validate materials and qualify them to their respective material groups, instead of considering them “Unlisted Steel”.
