You sure it wasn't the transmission Jay? Some cars are programmed to up shift very rapidly with light throttle and you'll find the transmission is into 2nd gear before even traveling a car length. Then, it takes a lot of throttle to get it to kick back down. Way more is required to get it to down shift again (about 2/3rds throttle or more) compared to the extra amount you needed to apply at the start to delay the up shift and get better acceleration. You almost have to transition right from no throttle to the 10% or 15% throttle that give acceptable acceleration instead of slowly easing into it.
