I have to qualify a welding procedure for Duplex material (UNS 32205). Which welding wire should I use for welding, and what precautions are to be taken during welding

For joining duplex to itself;
E2209

For joining to other materials (austenitic stainless)

E2209, E309MoL,

Also, no preheat required, keep the interpass temperature less then 350 deg F, and no PWHT.

Merzi,
There can be an expensive learning curve with Duplex, but there are some excellent reference publications available to help you get a good start. Avesta has one which I think is available online at and the International Molybdenum Association has an even better reference entitled ' Practical Guidelines for the Fabrication of Duplex Stainless Steels'. I believe their website is

Sorry for the bad link. The correct address for the IMOA is From there select Document Library and Downloads, and under Stainless Steel you'll see the brochure I mentioned in my earlier post.

Does anyone have extensive experience qualifying WPSs using 2205 to NAVSEA Tech Pub 248 para 4.7.5(f)? Specifically I'm interested in the requirement (if any) to MAINTAIN interpass temperature (vs. ensuring that WPS interpass max is not exceeded).

I've gotten great information from this link, but I'm in need of information specific to NAVSEA Tech Pub 248, not just 2205 in general.

I would contact Avesta Welding in Orchard Park, NY and see if they can offer assistance specific to your NAVSEA requirements. They make E2209 fillers and their former parent company helped develop the base metal.

Please find the following standards or guidelines.

- API TR938-C
- API RP582
- NiDI Series #14036/ #10014/ #11021
- Others (Many articles in Welding Journal, Stainless Steel World, etc.)
