The GE L90 relay has a built in web site. When going to look at the Live Source Metering web page, a Java applet is launched. This worked fine from Win2k, but we've moved on to WinXP. Microsoft Java is no longer included, and the applet won't run on Sun Java. I've managed to find an installable version of Microsoft Java, but it is no longer supported by Microsoft. Other applications have moved forward to support the newer releases of Sun Java Runtime, and no longer work with the Microsoft Runtime. Now I'm reconfiguring Internet Explorer every time one or the other Java versions won't work. GE tech support only states that Sun Java is not supported at this time. Anyone find a more user friendly workaround than the one I'm using? Yes, I know Enervista can get the same data. I like the web page.

Steve, too bad you didn't choose the right brand of relay for your relay with Ethernet connection. ;-)

Call someone in GE higher up than tech support.
Complain. Loudly. And often.
Keep going up the ladder until it is resolved,
or you receive a definitive answer (such as:
"we don't want to/intend to/cannot do it" or
some such. Then accept the fact that someone
made a bad acquisition choice in the first place
(which they did).

There is no, repeat NO, excuse for a company like
GE to require a user to use or maintain an inferior
O/S or environment. (Or any other company, for that
matter). There is also no justifiable reason to use
or purchase such a product as an end user.

David,

Careful, see the below rules prohibiting selling. [smile]

fsmyth,

Also be careful since I made the choice. In defense, all worked fine with the Win2K machines we had at the time. I am taking my request for firmware upgrade to the next level. Guess I'm the only one who noticed this.

You may have the only one they've sold
