Is AISI4140 or AISI4340 acceptable for use and a pressure containing part (such as flange or cap) under ASME VIII or is it restricted to bolting (per it's equivalent ASTM A193 B7)?

I am looking at a filter vessel that was assembled using API standard oilwell type componentents machined from AISI4140. Where it is being used it should ideally be treated as a vessel and the design should be checked accordingly.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Please see the applicable tables in Section VIII-1 for the permitted material specification. i.e. UCS-23, UHA-23 etc.

If the material is not listed in the table then it is not a premitted material for construction to the code.

Hope you do not plan to weld it.

See UCS-5(c) and table UCS-23

Thank you eliebl and deanc

That was my undrestanding also.

No - welding was not occuring on the item. All joints are threaded (buttress) which I believe leads to other issues anyway particularly on a 10" shell.
