use of rust remover on Rebars 1

Hello,
i noticed that some people use a chemical rust remover on Rebars.

is that Allowed?
it leaves a white phosphate coating on the rebar! and that coat sometimes get to Concrete in the construction joint!

i noticed that ACI didn't explicitly addressed this work practice.

any thoughts?

A little more info is needed. Are you talking about existing rebar in a member that is going to be repaired or rebar for new construction. In general, a light coat of rust isn't detrimental to the bond between the rebar and concrete. Typically, when we're repairing concrete the rebar receives a light brush blasting to remove loose rust and concrete laitance. Sometimes power tool cleaning - wire brush - is sufficient.

I suggest you consult the manufacturer's data for the product you're using. It should state if the residue will affect the bond.

i realise that little rust is even better as it enhances bond

my main concern is this material, i see a lot of contractors using it. it leave a layer on steel and on concrete in the construction joint.

Have you ever seen such a practice? cleaning rebars with chemical rust remover?

i tried to see if it is mentioned in ACI, but i did find anything

i don't believe it is manufactured for use on Rebars, i think it is manufactured for use on other steel. like metal equipment or something.

but contractors use it without thinking

- I have never seen such a practice . Moreover , if i were , would not allow the use of chemical rust remover.

- Refer to 26.6.1.2 Compliance requirements:

(b) Nonprestressed reinforcement with rust, mill scale,
or a combination of both shall be considered satisfactory,
provided a hand-wire-brushed representative test
specimen of the reinforcement complies...

- and commentary R26.6.1.2(b)

Just use brush ..

As an aside, I'd be reluctant to use chemicals for cleaning rebar and would do a lot of research. The chemicals may not be friendly and may be deleterious.
