Dear Engineers,

One of my client has come up with a requirement of using swing bolts instead of normal stud bolts for a filter vessel on ASME 16.5/ 16.47 flanges.
Is the use of swing bolts instead of stud bolts acceptable as per code?
Do we have to perform any additional calculation to meet the ASME Div-1 requirement?

I am unable to find any code reference for the use of such bolts.

Below is the proposed arrangement.

Yes you can, these are quite commonly designed to ASME VIII-1 and code stamped. Required bolting is calculated to Appendix 2, the lid is calculated to UG-34. You'll need to use U-2(g) and come up with a method to validate the swingbolt attachment to the main flange.

cbPVme is spot on.

Just to add a couple of things.
1) These are no longer standard ASME B16.5 / B16.47 flanges, so you will need to perform custom Appendix 2 calculations.
2) Because the bolts are contained in slots instead of bolt holes, the OD of the flange is not continuous. For the purposes of the calculation, you have to calculate the flange with an OD equal to the bolt circle diameter minus the bolt hole diameter.

Cheers,

Thanks for your valuable inputs.
It is clear that these are no longer standard flanges, Appendix 2 calculation and U-2(g) will be required to code stamp these vessels.
