Hello all,

I am FE analysist but somewhat of an ASME BPCV Sec VIII novice, and have begun course work for learning Div 2. I am trying to invoke Div 2 Part 5 in accordance with the Mandatory Appendix 46 of Div 1. When doing so, I am unsure how much of Div 2 I should be following. I assume all it of unless otherwise stated in the appendix of Div 1. E.g. my report should have all items listed in 2.3.3.3 that apply to my analysis and, the analysis should be in accordance to 5.2.1.2 when dealing with complex geometry. But, I should use a beta of 3.5 when using the elastic-plastic stress analysis method. Is my assumption correct?

Thank you all for your consideration on the topic.

Something like Section 2.3.3.3 is good practice for all Div 1 design reports, however it's not mandatory. I can't find any references to what should be contained in a Div 1 report.
The AI is only really interested in the 3rd party reviewed GA drawing. This is the only document that the AI will stamp upon completion of fabrication.
I'm not sure if the AI needs to see a design report. Perhaps the AI will ask to see a report with "Design Calculation" written on the front of it with a 3rd party inspection Stamp for peace of mind, however they won't have the skill to review the report.
Appendix 46 specifies the correct beta.

Hello,

Beta for elastic-plastic analysis for protection against plastic collapse is clearly stated in Appendix 46.

However, related to demonstrating protection against collapse from buckling, ASME VIII div 1 Appendix 46-4(c)(3) states :
"When demonstrating protection against collapse from buckling in Div2, 5.4, the design margin of the division 2 assessment procedure shall be used."

Based on this I would think that for a type 3 elastic-plastic buckling analysis a lower beta value is allowed?

Best regards,

JVT.
