Hi,

I'm in the process of working towards my PE and was wondering if anyone has successfully used experience gained abroad as part of the 4 years experience requirement? I have contacted the state board and they have advised that the 4 years needs to be 'under the supervision of a PE or similarly qualified individual' but wouldn't comment any further.

If at all possible, use experience gained under a PE licensed in the US. Even if the work was not being performed by US codes and standards.

I tried to use a P.Eng from Canada; my state board contacted me asking why one of my supervisors was not licensed. I had clearly stated which province he was licensed in, and the license number. I ended up providing an additional reference licensed in the US. Maybe it would have worked out, but it is not worth the headache if you can avoid it.

Yes, you can do it. I've been a reference (for the US work) for someone who successfully used out of country experience to count toward their applicable experience. Check with your board to determine how to report it correctly.

Yes, you can use actual engineering experience acquired outside the US. Depending on the state licensing board, the rules may vary. In my case I had to write DETAILED statements of the projects I had worked abroad. You need to give timelines for the projects, costs, and outcome (results.)

Contact your licensing board and explain your specific situation and start gathering the information for presenting to the licensing board.
