Good morning gents,

Our tank was fabricated and fully painted in other country. We used paint material from one product.

After arrive on site we found some painted area are damages due to handling during transportation. I can see the bare metal on some area.

In our job site we do not have paint material from the same manufacturer.

My understanding as long as we have the same generic there should not be a problem in using paint material from other manufacturer over the existing paint. We shall use the same RAL as well.

I am planning to as my painting supplier for their advise.

Any comments and suggestion is highly appreciated.

Follow the surface preparation methods of the manufacturer of the paint you're using for any re-coating you're doing- after cure, many paints require sanding/scuffing prior to re-coating. But in general, you're right- paints can go over paints of like TYPE, typically irrespective of manufacturer- alkyds over alkyds, epoxy over epoxy etc. Overcoating of dissimilar types is trickier and may result in failure of the underlayer to substrate bond due to solvent swelling etc.

hi

usually not advisable to apply paints a provider over another provider, but in daily practice we have to consider the costs , time and the impact it brings to a project.

in my experience I have made these works hand in hand with the paint supplier , MUST be tested for adhesion to different thicknesses and curing times to ensure coating. (ASTM D3359)

if you have good results with the new provider you must perform service procedures in the areas where the metal is exposed and a color match ( RAL ) for which you must perform sanding throughout the area to paint and proceed to topcoating and ready.

for more information you could say that type of system ? expoxy or alkyd ...
