Using PSE like Parts&Vendors

I'm relatively new with a company that has used I-DEAS with TeamCenter for years & has recently switched to NX. Like at many companies, I presume, TeamCenter is used as little more than a PDM system: check in, check out, a little bit of workflow.

I'd like to use TeamCenter similar to how I've used Parts&Vendors in conjunction with SolidWorks in the past - creating & managing a complete BOM (including non-CAD items); capturing vendor data; tracking cost & doing rollups; and tracking the readiness of all items in the BOM (e.g. ready for drafting, ready for quote, ready for purchase).

I have no doubt TeamCenter is capable of this. But can I, as an end user, practically implement it? There is little hope of getting support at this time; my best bet is to build a simple analog to P&V and say, "See how awesome this is? Wouldn't it be nice if everyone used it instead of spreadsheets? And even nicer if we invested a bit more in it?

I believe PSE is the tool to use.

Some things should be handled as occurrence notes - pieces of data tied to a sepcific BOM line rather than the item dataset. For example, when an item is ordered, I'd like to track the PO number, quantity, and due date. When the item is received, I'd like to track the quantity and project stock location (this is leveraging TeamCenter data for project management, which I've done very successfully with P&V in the past).

Other data items I would like to track on a per item basis, such as the vendor and vendor part number for commodity items. This is so basic that I'm shocked they don't do it here (is it built into TeamCenter & I'm just not seeing it?). Then I would like to display those item attributes in a specific BOM view.

I purchased the only TeamCenter book I could find (the Design Visionaries one). It's oriented towards NX integration and even most of that information is trivial.

I've read through much of the online documentation, which is where I learned about such concepts as occurrence notes, but I don't know how to create one, let alone display it in a BOM view.

Any help, reference pointers, or tutorials would be greatly appreciated. I'll report back here any progress I make for the benefit of future users.

Thanks,
Rob
