Utility Trench repair 1

One of my clients has asked for a detail that shows trench repair with concrete reinforced with #10 mesh with 6"x6" openings tied into the existing concrete by dowels. Any thoughts or sources on this?

Is this a trench repair in a concrete roadway pavement? It's sounds similar to NYCDOT practice, which uses unreinforced concrete.

Large automaker plant expansion--continual semi traffic. Owner wants concrete repair whether ashpalt or concrete surrounding. Dowel only if connecting to concrete.

I just looked at some NYCDOT trench repair details (Drawings HB1042 A & B) - unfortunately the copies are not good quality.

For pavement reinforced with WWF they don't dowel the new into the old. The detail calls for using the same size mesh and cutting a dovetail in the existing base. The patch width is the full width of the traffic lane; in the opposite direction it is the trench width + 1'-6" each side of the trench (W+3' total).

Similar for unreinforced pavement or asphalt pavement except the W+3 is reduced to W+2'.

Patch thickness for concrete pavement is the same thickness as the existing; for asphalt pavement it is 6" of asphalt on 6" of stone.

One important consideration is the preparation of the existing face. Scarifying and grooving of the older face may be required to provide a sfficient joint, if the numbers of your keyway are insufficient. Roughening to a 1/4" amplitude can provide shear transfer by shear friction across the joint.
