Does anyone know of a way to prevent licence hogging in Catia V5?

We intend to procure limited numbers of certain specialist licences to cover our design / manufacturing requirements on a new program. However, using our standard Catia V5 licencing methods, once a user has selected one of these licences, they will automatically be allocated the licence, if available, every time they log on - whether they use the licence in that session or not - until either they de-select the licence, or their licence CATSettings are deleted. Users being the forgetful creatures that we are, this means that we will quickly reach a situation where some engineers who need the licences will be refused access, while others will have the licences but not actually need them.

Since we would prefer not to delete users' licence CATSettings every night, does anyone know of a way of forcing the system to release non-utilised licences? I know this may be more of a LUM question than a genuine Catia V5 question, but I'd be interested if anyone has a solution

The license should not be selected in licensing but should be checked in Shareable products, that way the licence will be dropped if it is not used, allowing other users to pick it up

Ta Trevor,

It looks like the temporary licence that we've been testing with can't be set up as shareable, but there should be no problems with the production ones.

Just a note: sharable products, at least in some releases, are VERY unstable. When it's really bad, V5 will just crash. Sometimes every mouse click will result in a Command Interrupted error. Other times, it will just be really slow.

IBM is aware of this problem, but I'm unaware of any fix.

If I were the admin, I'd set up multiple environments with different licence options and write an interactive launcher such that if the user knew s/he was going to be doing tubing, he'd pull the tubing environment (and thus the licence).

By default, it would just launch a standard environment with whatever licence configuration you use (MD2, HD2, AL2, etc.)

Yes, all this to avoid sharables. In my experience, they are terrible.

haha.. terrible sharables.

I've set read-only attribute to DynLicensing.CATSettings and that works fine. At least in earlier versions, the licenses wasn't dropped att session end, I'm not sure if they are dropped at session end now.

We have not seen this instability with Shareable Licenses, which is a good thing, as we have 3 Configurations, and 20-25 different shareable products - your workaround would be completely un-workable in our case. We are currently running R13SP6, and are working towards R14SP5 for our next production push.

If memory serves me right the issue was corrected in R12SP7. I tried searching for the APAR but could not find it. IBM changed their Tech. Support website and the search tool isn't the same.

I found two APARs I printed almost a year ago.

HD19161: CATIA CRASHES AFTER USE OF THE SHAREBLE PRODUCT TAB
THIS PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED AT
CATIA VERSION 5 RELEASE 14 GA LEVEL.
Details are viewable on the Tech. Support page.

HD18683: CATIA FAILS WITH A RUNTIME EXCEPTION AFTER USE OF SHAREBLE PRODUCT TAB
THIS PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED AT
CATIA VERSION 5 RELEASE 14 GA LEVEL
ALSO FIXED AT V5R12SP06 AND V5R13SP03 LEVEL.
I could not find the details for this one any longer.
