I just got an invite from the local sales director of our CAD supplier to join LinkedIn. for anyone unfamiliar with it.

I've previously had people try to persuade me to join, most noticeably my direct boss.

So, out of interest what is members opinion of the usefulness etc of this sight?

That's just Gen Y all over. How much have you contributed? (grins)

SIG:please see FAQ731-376 for tips on how to make the best use of Eng-Tips.

I have used it to re-connect with some former colleagues and classmates. I have also begun looking at some of the groups. As GregLocock indicates, what you put in will affect how useful a tool it can become. I have received notifications of job openings all of which would require relocation (something not real practical for me at the moment). Overall a positive experience and I like how the site recommends accepting links from people you professionally trust.

I don't understand how the groups work.

What the groups do is provide you with access to other members who aren't within your current network. There are professional groups, alumni groups and even fan groups (I'm a member of Red Sox Nation for instance). You can search for groups (i.e. eng-tips member group) and request to join. Assuming they've selected the option, you will then be able to contact many of the group's members directly. It's a good way to reconnect or meet others in your profession.

This site is also great for stalking. I just found out where an exgirlfriend works.

^^ Almost wanted to give you a star, but then thought, "What if he is 'one of the quite ones'?"

I suppose it's like anything else; It's only as good as you make it.

This site is a perfect example; If you join and don't ever log in, then it's not of much use.
