Hello,

I am currently working on a bitumen storage facility in Algeria, North Africa, the client has specified that both inlet and outlet lines of the bitumen storage tanks must be "Butterfly", but did not give any specification for the rest of the piping work (such as the line between pumps an storage tanks, loading station and pumps...), my question is as follows:

-What type of valves should be used in bitumen piping (gate valve, butterfly valves, ball valves...)

I should mention that all piping are oil-heated in order to maintain a certain viscosity for the bitumen to keep it flowing through the process lines.

looking forward to your responses

Metal seated Triple Offset Butterfly Valves or Plug Valves should be suitable based for the application.

Thank you for your reply,

could you give me more detais, how to choose this type of valves, is there a handbook or a standard to check ?

Agree with dd1972 - we used the same on a bitumen project recently. Bitumen lines were all heat traced with Thermon HPT electric tracing (good for up to 150-160degC maintain temp in the bulk fluid).

But these were only used for critical emergency safety related shutdown service only. Else they were all plain gates.

Thanks dd1972 and georgeverghese , this has been truly helpful.

You could use triple offset metal seated butterfly valves, and that's the only kind of "butterfly" valve you would want to use. But unless you really need quarter-turn operation and/or the valves required are very large, gate valves would be a logical choice.
