What is required? I have not been able to find out the type of valves that I should use. I've found some standards in CSA/TSSA for manual shut off valves for the digester/landfill sites but do not see anything regarding electrically/pneumatically operated valves.

Thanks in advance for anyone's input.

I would like to add that it is in a low flow (less than 15 SCFM) and low pressure (less than 5psi) system.

Electrical area classification has nothing to do with selection of manual valves. Electric actuators or solenoids, if used, need Cl1Div2 approval. So, what's your question, really?

unrelated to your question - but for any manual valves - do yourself a favor and use butterfly valves. We have plug valves on our site and while they work -they are more expensive and most require many turns to open close. Its annoying.

If you do use anything electric or pneumatic - just make sure it meets the hazardous area classification. You should check to make sure it doesn't have to be class 1 div 1 for a valve in that piping system. I see in NFPA 820 which governs the hazardous locations for digesters - they state the area around piping is class 1 div 1 - but stuff at our plant doesn't totally comply with this. For instance the manufacturer of our flare used a nema 4x box on their skid which is right next to the flare and piping. gotta pick your battles sometimes I guess

What state are you in? Is it an anaerobic digestion site? Are you burning the biogas in CHP's for power? What are you doing with the digested sludge?
