Valves tutorials--where to find? 2

I am new to Valves and need to know about the differences between various valve designs and when to use them. For example, when to use ball valve and when to use needle valve design.

There are also a couple of good articles in magazines such as "Chemical Engineering", "Chemical Engineering Progress" and "Hydrocarbon Processing" that vulgarize in an easy to read manner the subject.

Then, if you can get a copy of them somehow, also the following standards may represent a useful reading:
- EN 736-1:1995 Valves - Terminology - Part 1: Definition of types of valves;
- EN 736-2:1997 Valves - Terminology - Part 2: Definition of components of valves;
- EN 736-3:2008 Valves - Terminology - Part 3: Definition of terms.

Then there is the ISA Handbook of Control Valves.
Available from ISA, or undoubtedly available used from Brown's Book Store.

Valve selection depends on medium flowing trough your line, purpose(shut off or regulating), working conditions(temperature), actuation etc. There is a 'best' valve for every application, but every application is different and every valve type has lots of modificated variations. Selecting a perfect valve requiers much knowledge about valve types and possibilities to suit the flow.

I can't find any market data to give you a brief overview due to all commercial pages listed first in google, maybe someone else can post a clear overview?

One excellent valve book to purchase is An Introductory guide to Valve Selection. By Edwin Smith and B.E. Vivian. ISBN 0852989148.
