I need data on velocities of sound in DSS(S31803) and SDSS(S32750) for calculations related to Ultrasonic testing. Does anyone have refernces/data on the same???

Thanks and regards

The CRC Handbook gives values of 4990 m/s for cast steel, 4973 for nickel, 5000 for soft steel, 5130 for iron. I seem to remember that sound velocity is modulus dependent. That being the case and since modulus is chemistry dependent, as opposed to phase dependent, then the veocity in an alloy like 2205 or 2507 is going to be intermediate to iron and nickel. It does change pretty rapidly with temperature, but you're probably using it at room temperature for ultrasonics. These values are at 20C, which may or may not be room temperature where you are.
I hope that crude an approximation helps.

Thanks McGuire!!!

Mcguire's memory serves him well. The longitudinal wave speed L in an elastic solid is equal to

L = (E/rho)^0.5

where E = Young's modulus and rho = mass density. If you look up the density for each of these alloys and the modulus of elasticity, then you will be able to calculate the velocity of sound using the above equation. Good luck!

As already correctly stated in this thread the sound velocity is dependent upon Young's modulus. Therefore being duplex a dual phase steel with two different elastic modulus also the sound beam will experience two different velocity while travelling. From studies made to determine ferrite content through ultrasonic velocity measurement the following empiric equation was found and used for duplex steels:
V=5545.4+6.4*F (m/s)
where V is the longitudinal wave speed and F is the ferrite percentage. In this way, measuring V gives you the ferrite-austenite balance in your duplex or the other way around, knowing the ferrite content in your duplex gives you a good estimation of sound speed.
Hope it helps.
