I am preparing for an aws cert. and wonder if anyone has any tips on doing a vertical uphill weld with a mig and exactly what the test pad looks like. typhoondarren@yahoo.com

The test coupon is 6 inches long and prepared in whatever technique you are using (butt weld or fillet). It will be 3/8-inch thick for limited thickness, 3/4 for unlimited thickness. If butt weld, the bevel will need to be filled by weaving as you progress uphill. This is best accomplished by quelling the arc (keeping the arc small). If the arc gets large then weld will drip.

When welding uphill (3G or 3F position), I push inward and upward at the center of the weld, then backtrack and weave left to right. I keep repeating this process until the weld area is completely filled.

Practice a lot...particularly if radiography will be used for your test. It will show up all the slag and porosity that poor technique tend to trap. For bend testing, slag and porosity will still show but your are more likely to get by with it in the bend test than with radiography.

Good luck.

That was a good tip on the 3g weld test it was what i was looking for could have been beter to have a ideal heat setting or some amprage and voltage rang but thanks i havent joind your site but if i come across any useful tip ill share them thanks again classb welder out

The voltage/current settings for GMAW will need to be closely controlled due to the fact that theree is no supporting slag for the solodifying weld metal.

I suggest practicing on tee joints making fillet welds. Up to a point, the faster you move across the center, the flatter your bead will be. You may have to start out making rather large beads to get the hang of it.

Usually, GMAW isn't used much for out of position work. I think that it has its place and if propery applied, works well.
