hi all sorry for newb questions still very new to solid works.
I have looked all over for the answer to this.

I want to draw then move to solid cam to use on a CNC milling machine I have.

Now the view or plane I want to draw on is the X axis to face me and Y to the side with Z to the top.

I am guessing there is an easy answer to this but trust me I have as yet not found it!

I can get close with a manual rotate but never close enought to draw with.

The reason I want this view is to draw a cross section then extrude it to the length I want then export to the cam program.

Is this possibe or will I have to draw it the re-orient the drawing to how I want it?

I have the solid works 2010 bible so if the answer is in there please just point me to it and I will re read it lol.

Many thanks for any answers

When you use the term "draw" I assume you mean "model". The term "draw" is usually reserved for the 2D drawing views created from the 3D solid model (sldprt or sldasm).

SolidCAM is a fully integrated CAM program which can 'read' the SW file format.

Not sure what you are really doing here, but have you watched the video tutorial at ? It explains how to re-orient the SW part to suit the CAM axes.

Thank you for thaT i WILL HAVE A LOOK AT THAT NOW

Those not using SolidCAM might also look into using "Insert - Reference Geometry - Coordinate System".

You can use that to create a CS that orients the part for your CAM software.

When you are exporting your file, use the dropdown menu that you see when you hit "Options" to select the correct CS.

Sorry I did not make it very clear what I was trying to do.

I was trying to model a section view and extrude it to a 3d model. It was a slot section for a tool draw bar.
I am new to solidworks and solid cam the boss decided we needed to move forward lol. I am used to just doing a drawing/model and noting the points and writing my own Gcode so this to me is very hard and not saying my boss is tight but my conversion to this software is a book lol great.
So most of my xmas has been reading and watching videos on solid works etc and the way a lot of stuff is done now is a lot differant to the way I have done it most of it is better
but that does not take away the fact I feel like I have to relearn most of my job.
Well back to the books.

The SW 2010 Bible is a great book, but it is not for beginners.

Have you worked through the built-in tutorials?

Kaiworks,

Your best bet is to go through the SWX tutorials, as CBL has suggested. Do not be intimidated, it may be different from what you are used to, but SWX is very easy to learn, especially since what you describe is very easy to do.
