Hi,
Per ASME Sec VIII, UG-90(a)(9), one of the responsibilities of the Manufacturer is:
“Examination of the shell and head sections to confirm they have been properly formed to the specified shapes within the permissible tolerances [UG-79 (shells and head), UG-80 (shells), UG-81 (formed heads), UF-27 (shells), UF-29 (heads)]”
Does this apply to pipe caps?
Pls. guide me ASAP.

Hi,
Thanks for quick reply.
But how the shape (curvature)of the caps, is examined?
Pls. guide me!
Thanks

Surely the pipe cap manufacturer has done this for you and has supplied suitable certification / inspection documents for the caps in accordance with the relevant code - e.g. ASME B16.9 - or are you trying to make the caps yourself?

Does this apply to pipe caps?

No.

For Section VIII Div. 1 fabrication, pipe caps may be received and accepted under UG-11 rules for standard pressure parts. They are a built to an ASME B16.9 standard accepted by Section VIII. Also, pipe caps are not elliptical heads, and the calculations for pressure should not be done for an elliptical head. See UG-44 where it requires B16.9 fittings (pipe caps) to be designed as seamless pipe with the stress value of the pipe cap material.
