Hi for everyone!, Regarding this matter somebody could help me? it is necessary the installation of a vortex breaker in inlet pipe when a EFR is designed?. How can i design it? API 650 does not make some reference! the Floating Roof could be damaged without VB? The EFR is Double Deck type, Tank Dia= 240 ft, Cap=500,000 Bls.
Thanks in advance

Emphatically YES. What is the pipe size and fill rate?

I have seen very, very few vortex breakers on tank inlets. I would tend to answer that they are not needed unless flow rates and velocities require their use. Also, I also tend to only see them on tank OUTLETS, not inlets.

I agree with JoeTank. Typically I have seen diffusers on inlets and vortex breakers on outlets only. Unless it is a combination inlet/outlet.

The concern is the External Floating Roof integrity (seals), it could be afected by the crude movement when is pumping into the tank, Q= 5,000 Gal/min. Pipe inlet Dia= 30". The oulet 42" flow by gravity. API Grav.16

22320ajv,

I also tend to agree with Joe that vortex breakers are usually seen at outlets, not inlets. When liquid is withdrawn from a tank or vessel, vortexing could cause some problems like allowing vapor into a pump which could cause cavitation. The process engineer is the one who specifies if a vortex breaker is required because they are the ones who do those hydraulic calculations.

I think you could solve your problem by using an inlet diffuser and directing the flow velocity and direction (away from seals).
