Hello everyone,

Just wondering what is everyone's experience with using a voltage sensing relay to close on a 138kV line/reclose. I don't think synch check is possible using one of this. If so, what is the approach one should take?

Is the only option to close by being the leading end?

If there are PTs on both sides of the breaker, then you can do synch check.

Prior to microprocessor based relays, many reclosing circuits did not additional electromechanical relays to perform sync check. If there is negligable risk of closing out of sync, using a voltage sensing relay can work to enforce a live-bus/live-line condition.

For example, we have one portion of the grid that normally has 4 lines in parallel and the line reclosing does not use sync check. However, Dispatch turns off automatic reclosing any time less than 3 lines are in service.
