Wall Opening

I have to make this new opening in a concrete shear wall, but I screwed up and let the architect open it in a very poor location.

However, there is an opening very close to the new opening and only a tiny sliver of 1.5' of wall touches the wall above.
I tried solving the 1.5' of wall as a column and it fails in compression and shear.

I am not sure how else to solve this local concentration of forces, and if anyone has any advice, I will greatly appreicate it.

Does it really behave as a column? Or are there alternate load paths for compression and shear.

Tell the architect that you need to move it XX inches to get it to work, or design a steel column to take some load bolted to the back

Perhaps a sketch with some loads so we can get a magnitude of the issue. Wall thickness?

If this is a precast wall panel then you have a host of issues to look at.

If this is a cast in place concrete wall without much load on it and some alternate load paths, you must be just fine as is.

Can you frame around it, pretending the whole opening space is a big hole? From a bearing point, there is really 'no column'... bigger concerns would be lateral.

Pretend the door was 1.5' wider and there was no continuity in the little sliver between the openings. If that works then I think you're fine.

@JLNJ, whats the difference, wouldn't they both have to meet the same code, and thus similar reinforcing in the end? Are you thinking post tensioning reinforcing?

my thought would be if it's pre-cast likely cutting the opening vs if new cast-in-place wall then you have opportunities to revise the reinforcement detailing assuming it hasn't been placed yet.
