Hi All,

First post, long time lurker from Australia.

Came across this popular YouTuber building a gym. The design is without internal shear walls or portal frame.


I can only see 2 scenarios, the depth / breadth ratio of the building allows the use of end shear walls only.

Or the timber wall columns/mullions are cantilevered out of the ground.

We don't do this in Australia, because steel is more cost effective with portal frames, just curious how this comps up to standards/engineering principles

I can't really tell what the lateral resisting system is based on that video.
 
Hard to tell from the videos. As an Australian myself it doesn't look structurally adequate. I assume it has building approval and has been designed structurally. Remember that wind loads can be considerably less than we're used to in Australia.
 
Looks like a standard "Pole Building". In US, (when/if) they are designed based on NFBA (National Frame Builders Assoc.) standards.
Some stability is provided by the post embedment and some by the way the siding is attached (generally about 100 plf shear resistance for 26 gage metal siding).
15 ft is pretty tall for one of those.
Commonly used for Ag buildings. Some houses use them but they (those who build them) say construction loans and insurance can be hard to get.

In northern europe where I live it's quite common to attach plywood boards to the wall framing to secure lateral stability
