water coming from drain in garage floor

Have a 5 yr old house bought in 2000. Noticed a couple cracks in floor in last yr. In last 6 months have noticed that in a real down pour, our drain in the center of the garage floor backs up with water. It seems to happen in very heavy rain and will stop when intensity of rain slows down. Garage is in front of house on one side. No real slope from front of yard to garage. puzzled..

One of two things likely causing this....
Since you are not experiencing water through the cracks, it isn't likely that you have a high groundwater problem. It is likely that your garage floor drain exits to a "french drain" or to a catch basin at the street. In heavy downpours, the drainage from these can be slow and can "back up" This is likely the cause.

Find the outfall of your drain and you will likely find the source of your problem.

Thanks, Ron

Would capping the drain in the garage floor result in any problems during a rain storm under either scenario you suggested?

If you have no leaks in the pipe and the pipe joints are in good condition, plugging then capping should not be an issue. It sounds like you have relatively low pressure in the backup, so it should be OK with that.

Use a pipe plug (expansion type, available at hardware store) then put a blanking cover on the drain. This type of cover has a sealing gasket.
