WEG motor failures?

Trying to fend off a salesman; we have a steel mill full of various-sized WEG motors. We've had fair reliability with them, but a pesky salesman keeps telling me that WEG's are notorious for core failures and we are doomed to continual failure if we stick with WEG. Has anybody experienced this supposed reliability issue with WEG's? I'd like to put this to bed once and for all.
Thanks.

Hi, as it happens I spent some time at WEGs Sau Palo factory, their working practices are as good as any I've seen anywhere so I'd be very suprised if they turned out to be sub standard. Its those Chinese motors you need to avoid like the plauge.

You might get the guy out of your office by insisting he not come back without some detailed independent reports and several verifiable contacts behind his claim.

Our facility has rewound many of these motors, one problem we found is that after a standard burn off cycle at 750f and then perform core loss testing, the core lamination insulation brokedown on every motor we put through a standard burn off cycle and the core would require a complete restack and re-insulation of the lamination. Most mfg insulation on the laminations are rated around 1300f or higher. I don't know what theirs is rated, but I do know it will not hold up to 750f. Maybe they have corrected this problem by now?

Comment: The big manufacturers tend to optimize product for maximum profits. There is nothing new about this. E.g. a car may have its life-cycle fine-tuned for five years. At that time, the very major overhaul is needed.

Thanks for all the help...I guess I was just fishing for some known weakness with the Wegs...the salesman was telling me the same thing as Motorhead, except he said the problem occurred during normal operation; maybe his rewind shop has encountered what motorhead said and he's blaming it on operating conditions rather than burn-off. Either way, it doesn't sound like Weg is a notorious dog, so I'll stick with them. Thanks again for all the help. Next time he pops off with his anti-weg diatribe I can comfortably tell him to go bother somebody else :)

Hmmm, it appears that your salesman has found a 'buzz word'.

The next time you speak to him ask him to expand on his comment. Ask him is it the grade of steel used to make the core or is it the manufacturing method?

On this subject, one problem you could fall upon is when motors are rewound. If the original fault created a 'hot spot' within the core then the life of the rewound motor will be lower than envisaged. The method used to remove the wire from the core can also cause core problems, especially if direct heat is applied to the core by a blow torch.

The next time you get a WEG failure take a look at the windings and core or perhaps get a motor repair agent to talk you through the various problems associated with the failure of electric motors.

casterjack,
once upon a time when fairy tales were real I remember WEG as being terrible. Now that's motors made in the 60's with bearings spinning out of end plates rotor keys failing and so on and on and on.

They have really got thier stuff together of late and reliabilty surprised me for the better.

Maybe the best way to fix the rep is the one to scare him most --- I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THEM _ WE HAVE NO HISTORY OF PROBLEMS SO HOW ARE YOU GONNA MAKE IT WORTH OUR WHILE,

Then tell him you by WEGs for about 15% less than you really do. If knows how much you pay he'll be pissed off and not come back, if he don't he may do you a deal to help your budget, if he can't he might just fade away.

Anyway have fun now
Don

Thanks again all...being the new engineering guy, I can break with tradition without worrying about who I piss off. I've found a new rewind shop that not only beats this guy's prices but also doesn't annoy the piss out of me by trying to upsell me everytime I call him.
Thanks for the info all.
Jack
