weight of steel beam

I would like to know how to figure the weight of a steel w-beam with the given dimensions of 12w48x58-2

Could you be more clear on what that string of numbers represents? Depth? Width? Flange thickness? etc.

Jae these were the dimensions given on a material list, I have tried to see if steel beams were measured differently then other materials but I cannot find any info. I think 14w is the flange size and the rest is width and length

OK that makes sense....in that case it would theoretically be a W12x48 (or is it W14x48??? you used both)

There historically have been very few 12" beams at 48 pounds per foot - just some old Bethlehem shapes from many years ago. There are currently W14x48 sections rolled.

The 58-2 would perhaps be the length of 58'-2".

Thanks JAE, sorry it is 14W. Thats much better i had a hard time placing that 48 but it does seem clear now Thanks

48# per foot is the second number, so 58.17x48= weight of the beam.

You have an old shape which would be a W12x48.
Dicksewrrat is correct. 58'-2" x 48 = 2792 lbs
