Hi,
Can anyone explain what is acceptance criteria for welding reinforcement? I have actual weld reinforcement which is 20mm but in design it is 18mm. Please give reference also

What kind of joint, what shape of weld?

What size of fillet or butt weld, and what diameter (or height and length) and thickness of what material?

(You have asked the equivalent of: "I have an old nut. What will it fit?)

Is this question specific for any Code? If so, it would help greatly to share what that Code is...

It is plate to plate butt joint.size of butt weld mentioned in drawing is 18mm & size of plate is 18mm and material is CS.

Right. Now, what Code are you building the pressure vessel in accordance with?
What pressure, what temperature, what service, what fluid?

its a structural weld . we following AWS D1.1. about 1.5 tons are acting on it.

Welcome to Eng-tips. So... how 'bout posting your query in a structural engineering forum where the readers are familiar with structural welding? Perhaps forum725.

You have full penetration weld in 18 mm plate and the actual thickness of weld is 20 mm. In that case the reinforcement is 2 mm and is acceptable.

No, the "distance" measured for a weld reinforcement is from the surface UP to the top (highest point) of the weld bead ABOVE the surface. So, 20 mm weld reinforcement is too high.

Now, the original poster has NOT provided pictures, nor much other information about his structural welds under question. We are ASSUMING he knows how to measure weld reinforcement.

Weld reinforcement typically refers to the extra weld material above a butt joint. The typical limit for that is 3mm, so kawishkt is definitely talking about something else.

Perhaps he is talking about a fillet weld? But those are sized by the leg length whereas the reinforcement is above the throat thickness, so I caution kawishkt to make sure he is measuring the right areas.

As racookpe1978 stated if your weld thickness is actually 38 mm and the plate thickness is 18 mm, you have too much reinforcement. I am not sure haw one does this, however! And if so the welder should be fired post haste.

kawishkt, terminology can be a killer. You should study welding before soliciting advice, particularly in this type of forum.
