Weld Strength (Elastic Method) 3

Hello,

I am looking for guidance on using the elastic method with different size and type welds in the weld group. For example an HSS connected to an HSS at a right angle with a 3/8in bevel weld on the top and 1/16in fillet welds on the sides. Elastic method goes ahead and determines a size needed for the whole weld group, but the welds are different sizes and experiencing different stresses.

-I can see taking it to the centroid being the technically correct way to do it, with small welds the change in the group moment of inertia would likely be pretty small so instead of needing 3.6/16 of fillet you might need 3.4/16 both of which we'd round up to a 1/4 fillet anyway.
-Taking it to the face of the connected parts that yields the smallest form of the weld group would likely produce conservative group section properties.

Yeah I figured about as much.

The only times I can see it being critical is welding only on the inside of a shape, and to be honest that virtually never occurs in real structures, and also if you had partial penetration welds it would be slightly unconservative, say 2 x 6mm Partial penetration welds on a 25mm plate would move the welds inwards of the face of the member rather than outwards like an external fillet leading to a smaller than analysed weld group.

Not sure if this is of use to anyone, but I found an instantaneous centre of rotation weld calculator the other day, the guy also does a bolting one (both tools as an online version and spreadsheets). He provides the VBA code in some of his earlier posts also if anyone is interested in exploring the differences between the elastic and IC methods of analysis. Link
