Can you use a WPS for GTAW root-ER70S2 and fill and cap SMAW with E7018 on P1 to P1 base metal for a new welder qualification of a GTAW-ER70S2 all the way out.

Yes. ASME does it a little different from AWS, as the welder is qualified on the weld metal thickness, not the base metal thickness.

Thanks, DWVE for the prompt answer to my question. If I am getting this right you have already qualified the GTAW-ER70S2 by the root pass so it is okay to drop the SMAW fill and cap and weld out with GTAW-ER70S2 and the thickness of weld metal deposit then determines the thickness qualified for this welder qualification. Can you tell me where in the ASME section IX that this is stated or refered to. Thanks again for the answer.

QW-452. This is for 'performance' qualification.

Refer to QW-451 for you 'procedure' qualified thicknesses (base metal and weld metal).

You should also read QW-300.2 Your welders are qualified in accordance with a qualified WPS. I'm not sure what your plate thicknesses are, but you should back check these with QW-451 and QW-452.

In other words, if your root deposit was 1/4" on your WPS, then your welders could qualify to 1/2" weld metal thickness. Now use QW-452.1(b).

The welder is still held to the limitations of the WPS. That is, if the WPS is qualified to 1/4 inch with GTAW and 1/2 inch with SMAW for a total of 3/4 inch, the welder can not weld 3/4 inch with GTAW alone. The welder could only weld up to 1/4 inch with GTAW, qualifying him for 1/2 inch with GTAW. In practice he would still be held to the 1/4 inch limit until such time as there was a WPS available for 1/2 inch thick material.

Best regards - Al

but you are mixing the welding process, as i understand it unless you want to qualify your welder on GTAW and SMAW, you have to decide what's the proces s you welder will be qualified to I would run 2 coupons
1 GTAW and 1 SMAW to the appropriate thicknesses that way you are home free without conflicts. it pays to do it right
