Hello everyone,

I am having a problem interpreting the table QW 461.9 for welder qualification. I understand that if a welder is qualified for 1G he can perfrom 1F as well, but can not perfrom 3F. While my colleague is interpreting it as 1G qualifies for all positions of "F".

Can someone please help out?

Thank you.

If you look at QW-461.9, 1G plate - Groove Qualification Test and go along to Fillet or Tack it tells you you are qualified for F only.

Yes, I saw that, but it is not saying 1F, it says F. So does it mean that 1G = All positions F, or 1G = 1F?

That's because the numbers indicate a test position only. 1F, 1G, 2F, 2G etc. are test positions. Actual welding positions are F,H,V,O.

Thank you for your replies. I keep getting more and more confused, now I found in QW 452.6 that "Fillet welds are qualified when a welder qualifies on a groove weld test". Plus for GTAW 405.1 is a non essential variable, but 405.2 is a supplimentary essential, so I dont understand, if my welder is qualified for 1G GTAW, and I am adding 3F to his workload, since 405.1 is not essential, it means he can do it and I dont have to declare it. But 405.2 is a supplimentary essential variable, which is change in position. So what is the difference between addition of position and change of position?

Ok,
It is true that Fillet welds are qualified when a welder qualifies on a groove weld test. However, note the qualified range "All base material thicknesses, fillet sizes and diameters". No mention of position. For this you go to Table QW-461.9.

Next, you are confusing Welding Procedure Qualification with Performance (welder) Qualification. For GTAW welder essential variables, you need to see QW-356. In this table you will see that QW-405.1 is essential.
