Hi all,

I have a question for the ASME expertis,

It's clear for welding procedure qualification, as stated QW-211, plate qualifies pipe and vice versa, but in case of welder qualification, Does plate qualify pipe and vice versa??

Regards.

Yes fernin,
Welder qualified on plate also qualify for pipe, range of qualification shall determine in the following tables:
- Table QW-452.1 (b) - thickness of weld metal qualified.
- Table QW-461.9 - position and diameter limitations.

Thanks and glad to help you.

sincerely yours,

For flat position yes...
for other position, still yes with limitations like 24" and above

If you want a simple general answer; plate qualifies for structural shapes, not including tubulars, whereas qualifying on pipe qualifies the welder for both pipe and structural shapes. Remember what the abbreviation ASME stands for: Always, Sometimes, Maybe, and Except. You need to read ASME Section IX closely to see how your specific case is handled.

Best regards - Al
