Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read this.

We are welding 150mm x 50mm rectangular tube steel together to form a box.
The wall thickness is 5mm. We weld them to form perpendicular intersections so we basically weld a fillet weld up the sides of the tube, then weld flat accross the part where the header and the long beam intersect.
I am still waiting for the company to buy AWS standards for me. In the meantime, could anyone help me with surface preparation like bevels, weld techniques, weld size, etc. I eventually want to make proper WPS but I need to start somewhere.

If anyone has any experience or advice it would be appreciated.

Buy AWS D1.1 Standard. It sounds like you might be trying to cut a fat hog by requesting information without purchase but I am giving you the benefit of doubt.

Here is the web site, you purchase AWS D1.1 in electronic format with a credit card and you can down load it in 5 minutes. This will also be a valuable reference document for future work.

thanks. I know where to find it and how much it costs, but I refuse to pay for it out of my own pocket. I have asked my company to purchase it and they haven´t yet.
Not sure if I get the fat hog comment but if it means free information- then yes, I am guilty. Thanks for your time.

rookieweld;

Tell your company to purchase it or you can't do this work. Just like purchasing tools to perform a specific job.

Between the lines I detect a distinct lack of education in welding design. AWS D1.1 won't design it for you.

I agree, we lack proper welding design and procedure. I am doing the best I can with the very limited resources that we have available. Our structures need to be properly welded with good penetration because we galvanize them after and we have had problems there too.
Until now, welders have not even been cleaning the surface before welding, we are using MIG (MAG actually) and I know that proper surface penetration is important.

Do not worry about a thing. Once something fails and someone is hurt in the process, your employer will gladly ante up the money to buy a copy of D1.1. That is, if there is any money in the company coffers after the case goes to litigation.

Best regards - Al

gtaw,
That is exactly the decision-making process used for installing traffic lights.

BTW, if your company tries to make weldments to a contract that specifies AWS D1.1, without a copy of the codebook and a knowledgeable welding engineer and/or CWI Certified Welding Inspector, they are knowling comitting froud.

Be damn careful what you, personally, sign.
