Dear all,

I have couple of questions to help me understand the ASME Sec IV Code better.

I would like to refer to HW-713(c) requirement.

What is exact explanation of wording "groove weld depth (if present)"?

a) Does it mean depth of bevel (weld preaparation) which secure required minimum depth of penetration?
b) Does it mean depth of penetration which may be obtained without bevel but by welding parameters only?

This may be also refered to many figures showing partial penetration welds, for example fig. HW -701.3(c), which raises a question:

Is it allowed acc. to the Code to make partial penetration welds with a minimum required depth of penetration without any bevel preparation basing on welding parameters only?

Thank you for your help

Groove weld depth is the depth of the weld prep bevel before welding. This would apply to partial and full penetration welds.
