Welding generator

Hi,

We have a portable DC welding set on site. The set is of unknown origin and bears basically no trade name.It was functioning rather well until it broke down. It was dismantled and we found that the diesel engine was coupled to a sort of electric motor rather than a generator set as no field was found and the rotor was a traditional squirrel cage one. Has anybody seen such type of welding set ?

It appears that the generator is an asynchrounous, self excited, brushless and self regulated generator.However, the set is not generating at all.

When you say it broke down, did it just stop generating or was it a mechanical failure?
I can't immagine how it works the closest I have seen is a welder with a permenent magnet rotor, I suspect it must need some residual magnetisim to start with.
I know with brush type generators after dissasembly we often had to flash them with a battery to start them off.

Thks Roy for your comments.It just stopped generating. Basically, there are two sets of wires, one set of three being rectified for dc welding qnd one set of three wires for ac supply.

Any pictures? Someone on this forum might know something about it if you can post a picture of the whole unit.
There is a welding generator section, though I don't know how much traffic it gets. There are also welding forums on the web where such a question might attract someone who knows something about it. for example.

Sounds almost like a one of a kind. I would guess your rectifiers have shorted or a capacitor has failed and the unit no longer builds up voltage.
 
If this works on the same principle as small self regulating gen sets, there will be some capacitors. Most common cause of failure with these is bad capacitors or capacitor wiring.
If there are no capacitors, I'll wait for the pictures.

Hi,

Thanks all for the comments. Basically, there is a set of three wires wired to the load with a set of capacitors in parallel. Another set of three wires is connected to a bank of rectifiers where the DC output is used for welding purpose.
