Hi All,

I am after advise or pointing in the correct direction of literature regarding the above.
We have some nickel alloy parts to be welded and I beleive this is best carried out in the soltion annealed condition. I am trying to understand the best process to carry out after welding, i.e straight to age hardening or another solution anneal followed by age hardening.
I have researched online and found that it may be beneficial to carry out another full solution anneal, but i am concerned this may affect the final grain size of the parts.
Should I shorten the solution ageing time based on the initial pre-weld solution anneal, or discount the second solution anneal altogehter and go direcly to ahe hardeninig after welding.
For information, I am using Alloy 925

Thanks all for any assistance

We do it both ways, depends on the alloy and application.
The second anneal would be done at shorter times if it was needed.
A lot of this depends on the weld filler and you heat input.
You may need to run some tests and see what you get for strength and toughness.

Thanks for the replies guys, your help is appreciated as always

I will take the information provided and carry out further assessment of the project

Hi Tensile CVN,

Welding of Precipitation harednable Nickel Alloys are much difficult than solid solution type of alloys. In fact the later type of alloys are more popular to a wide spectrum of industries. As the other gentlemen have already pointed out: prior annealing definitely helps to improve the ductility of BM, facilitating crack free welds.

You may follow the guidelines of this document:Information provided in Page 7 & 8 would be of help.Depending on the requirements you may choose the extent of Pre & post weld heat treatment.
Thanks.

Ed, Pradip...

Are friction welding and/or flash welding practical for PH CRES and or high nickel [HRA] alloys?

I have friction welded 718 in the annealed condition, then we machined and aged (this will depend on the other material).
We couldn't FW it in the aged condition because it had too high of hot strength, so no deformation.

Thanks ED

What about Flash Welding in the SHT condition... then PHT?

Done most of my work with LA Steel and Aluminum alloys.
