TABLE UW-12 RESTRICTS WELDING FROM ONE SIDE ONLY TO THICKNESSES OF LESS THAN 5/8" AND DIAMETERS OF LESS THAN 24.00" O.D. I AM TRYING TO DESIGN A VESSEL WITH A MATERIAL THICKNESS OF .75" WHICH WILL REQUIRE A 48" O.D. WELD THAT CAN ONLY BE ACCESSED FROM THE OUTSIDE. IS THERE A PROVISION IN THE ASME CODE FOR A WELD OF THIS SIZE FROM THE OUTSIDE ONLY?

There may be some confusion here. That is not what UW-12 says. Type 3 welds are welds that cannot or will not be inspected, esp: from the inside. If they can be inspected from the inside, then a Type 1 could be welded from one side only. Read it real close. See UW-3,UW-9,UW-12,UW-26,27,28,and UW-35.

Process: You can weld with a gas torch and coat hangers if you can qualify it to SecIX and it is not specifically prohibted by the construction code.

Always read the entire thing about 8 or 9 times. Never go by memory and always talk to your AIA(thats what you pay them for).
