I am a bit confused, in the summer edition of IT magazine the author said a common mistake is to list the positions as 1G,2G, 3G and 4G instead of F,V,H and OH. on WPS and PQR. Under Figure 4.3(see 4.3.4) Positions of Test Plates for groove welds it lists 1G Flat, 2G Horizontal, 3G Vertical and 4G overhead. 4.3.4 Positions of Welds. All welds shall be classified as flat(F), horizontal(H), vertical(V), and overhead(OH), in conformance with the definitions shown in Figures 4.1 and 4.2. Is there a difference? Is it a mistake?

Test positions and production welding positions are two separate animals. I recommend taking a look at the Sperko Engineering site for a great powerpoint on the subject. ASME is a bit more straight forward with the distinction than AWS is.
 
Clause 4.2.4 (AWS D1.1-2008, it was handy) does list the positions as F, H, V, or OH.

The position that 1F, 2F, 3F, 4F, and 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G are test positions.

So its F, V, H, OH on WPS's and it is alright to write 1F, 2F, 3F, 4F, and 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G on PQR's?
 
The WPS lists what can be welder, i.e., ranges, where as the PQR only lists what was actually done.

F,H,V & OH are all Position of joints for welding or any, but 1G,1F etc all are for weld positions. G-groove weld, F-fillet weld
