Clarification on the welding of sockolets and/or threadolets on to pipe of various sizes and schedules.

ex: size of precut hole in to 20" sch 80 pipe to installation of 2" 3000ansi threadolet.
B31.3 seems unclear to the spec on size of maximum or minimum size that can be cut into the pipe for 90 degree install, or depth in to or on to of the hole for welding.

As an interesting side note, some applications such as averaging pitot tubes (Annubars, etc.) avoid cutting the pipe to the full inside diameter of the 'olet.

as rule of thumb yes but from enginerring stand point can the "olet" be countersunk into the hole in the pipe to allow for better transition to the "olet"

As a rule of thumb, the weld fit-up should be designed the type of weld. Your minimum is not restricted (based on weld type). Your maximum is restricted by weld detail and weld procedures (root gap as per welding specifications).

Jimmy...

There are instructions typically given "in the box" that you bought the sockolet/threadolet.

These weren't thrown away, were they ?
