Need to weld to a built up member, web is between 1/8" and 3/16" thick. Overall depth is 10.5", flanges 4" wide, 3/8" thick.

I am needing to weld a support for a channel to attach to it. Its approx. 1200 lb reaction. Would you do a continuous weld, or a stitch weld for an angle connection? I guess I am worried they will just burn thru the thin web.

My other option is a vertical plate to the flanges, and weld my channel to that. But I see that introducing more eccentricity to the beam.

Thoughts?

It's common to weld cold form steel which is commonly thinner than 1/8". It's all about the process and proper weld sizing. As for continuous or stitch welds, it depends on what you need based on your weld design.

If you haven't, I would recommend a check of the existing member with this added load.

Thanks, I will proceed with my weld. Member checks out, its lightly loaded now as it is.
