Hanging a skyscraper (Hang-scraper? Sky-dongle? Cloud City?) sounds OK – but this thing would move across the earth over many countries. Think about all the building code inspectors that would get involved!

Architects want to hang a skyscraper from an asteroid

So no structural engineers want to do this I guess.

Sorry, sum of the forces does not equal zero. Maybe our mechanical brethren would like to take a shot at getting paid.

Great, here comes another chapter in ASCE-7 for wind on buildings moving thru the atmosphere!

A little bit like "The Fountains of Paradise" by Arthur C. Clarke. Don't knock it, he prophesied geo stationary satellites......

I'd work it pro bono in a heartbeat if somebody would be foolish enough to let me try.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

They will have to rename it though to "Architectural Society for Celestial Endeavours".

If you were an architect, why would you even bother wasting your time on this fantasy? The architect must not like getting paid, wasting time on nonsense.

The engineer and the architect should be friends.
Oh, the engineer and the architect should be friends.
The architect has his visions great,
the engineer tells him, no way mate,
But that's no reason why they cain't be friends.

Engineering folks should stick together,
Engineering folks should not be fools.
Engineers listen to architects' fancies,
Architects follow the engineers' rules. (repeat)

HSHHFHE... an old expression for some Architects... and begins and ends with "He ...head examined"...

Is it April 1 already?

This cannot be real...now I cannot joke about this anymore.

The words "Architect" and "reality" are oxymorons.

I've seen the concept before as a "Space Elevator" Link basically a rock on the end of a string orbiting the earth in a geosynchronous orbit. It's one of those things that's going to be entirely practical, just as soon as we invent a string that's 100 times stronger than steel, etc., etc.

Would we expect any less?
