Hi friends,

New to this and need some advice

I am working on a building, which we have decided to go with sprinkler system. All of the building except two areas in the building will not be heated.
Can a wet and dry sprinkler system be combined ?? How do we go about doing this ??

yes you can- generally, it's known as a 'dry pipe system' although up to a point, some of the lines are filled with water- there are special valves ( dry pipe valves) with a flapper in them- the flapper is held down by a gas pressure ( usually compressed air or nitrogen- ours is compressed air that is readily available) - the 'dry' pipes have sprinklers located every so many feet that have a fusible plug- in the event of a fire the plug melts, and air pressure is lost in the system- the flapper becomes umlatched & the pipes fill with water ...this is very general- remember you'll need a source of compressed air or gas

Get a competent sprinkler engineer or designer involved. They'll be able to assess the hazard and determine the options.
 
How large is the heated area? If small, why not do the entire building as a dry pipe system? Only upright sprinklers can be used on a dry system unless on return bend if space is heated, or dry pendent sprinklers ( cost is high about $80-100 per head depending on length of drop) are used.

You could use a preaction system on those two areas. Just an idea...
 
There are several options for this...If the 2 rooms are isolated, then you can run a small dry system off the wet system...If the areas around the room are heated, dry sidewall sprinklers may work...you can do an anti-freeze system for the 2 rooms. The option you choose is dependent on the layout of the building....the only thing you can't do is heat-trace the branch lines..that is not allowed by NFPA 13.

 
Safety question

I would like to know some points about NFPA . We will have to deal with an insurance company about fire protection.

Q-1 Is it normal flottation area ( mineral industry concentrating plant ) to have sprinkler at many places like near tank pumps etc.

Q-2 They obliged their client in some places to insulate the electrical teck wire in trays to be shooted with industrial isolation foam which cause replacement very complicated

Note the unsafe products are in a different room called '' reagents room ''. Some product used are flammable but they are not used 100% in the process but pumped and doses to the process area

What code coulde give me

1- The distance between a fuel tank to a building and an an aerian electrical high voltage

2- The distance between Process glycol radiator and building
