What does "BSP" mean when discussing connections?

I'd appreciate if someone could answer this one. When discussing connection types, e.g. half-inch BSP female etc. what do the letters BSP mean? What does this connection look like?

I think it is British Standard Pipe.
Try looking in Machinery's Handbook or an on-line search.

We find in the hydraulics industry, that when someone refers to BSP thread, they usually mean BSPP (British Standard Parallel) This is a parallel thread that seals with a flat washer.

The British standard also includes a tapered thread.

The Machinery's Handbook describes this.
