What does the "Allow Selection of Hidden Wireframe" toggle do?

This is a fairly popular toggle, but I cannot figure out what it is suppose to do.

I read the NX documentation, all it says it "Allows curves and edges that are hidden as a result of a display mode to be selected."

What exactly is a display mode? If someone can help me clarify this toggle and provide an example that would be great. Is this used with part modeling or assembly?

The display mode could either Hidden Line or Shaded. In both cases, the 'hidden' edges are not visible but with this option toggled ON, you'll still be able to select them.
