Hi all,
How exactly is a HAZID study defined, or, is it a well defined type of Process Hazard Analysis after all ? The CCPS bible, Guidelines for Hazard Evaluation Techniques, doesn't know or use that term ! For my understanding it is (1) an acronym for HAZard IDentification (study), no more no less and (2) the term has established itself as a broad-brushed precursor of a HAZOP study conducted at a rather early engineering stage (e.g. based on PFDs vs. P&IDs for the HAZOP) using a what-if/checklist methodology addressing issues also beyond process safety (occupational safety and health, natural phenomena etc.).
I would appreciate any definitions/links e.g. in the literature or on the WEB or experiences from experts that specialized in facilitating HAZIDS.
Best regards, lasac

I googled the term and found several things

What I hate is that a contractor building a facility will include the following language "Any items that require a redesign after the HAZOP will be an extra cost item and will either be bid on later or changes will be on a T&M basis."

I can see where sitting down and identifying all the hazards up front will cause less pain later. BUT, why not do the HAZOP up front? Thats what I normally do. I look at the "formal" HAZOP as no differnt than a legal trail, you never go into it without knowing the answers before the question is asked.

Thanks for your reply,
The links provided basically confirmed my understanding of HAZID studies. Both interpretations, item (1) and (2) of my opening question of the present thread, hold true. It is a what-if/checklist type, qualitative analysis, the procedure and scope of witch can be company defined or as used by HSE Consultancies offering study preparation/chairing services.
The HAZIDS I prepared and chaired were executed on procedures provided by the client. I used the PrimaTech's flexible PHAWorks software that provides what-if/checklist study worksheets for recording and structured guidance through HAZID studies just as much as for HAZOP studies.
It seems though that, contrary to the term HAZOP, the term HAZID is an acronym and not especially defined in the HSE literature. I havn't found training courses offered especially for HAZID leaders as training for HAZOP leadership covers other qualitative hazard/operability problems identification techniques based on brainstorming of a multidisciplinary team. I havn't heard the term HAZID being used by the pope of HAZOP, Trevor Kletz, either. Or, may I have overlooked something?
Best regards
