I was looking into flat panel monitor for our solidworks users. So I was wondering what others are using and/or recommendations. I was looking at the Viewsonic VA1903 19inch displays. Any thoughts ?

Go with the widest you can afford. Some of our people have the 24”. Their productivity is up 10% from before. That is compared with me on the small 19”, less zooming in and out.

Viewsonic VP2030B. Granted it's a square monitor, but the clarity and response are second to none.

We picked up some 20" Dell flat panels on the dell refurb site. I think they are model 2007FP. They were relatively inexpensive and noone has had any problems with them. Image quality is real nice. The contrast is excellent.

I just picked up a 22" Samsung Synchmaster.

Blew my frickin socks off. Set me back around $500 CDN, but I haven't once regretted the purchase.

Specs, Intel Pentium M 2.16 Mhz
SW 2007 R2.2

NVidia GE Force GO 6800 256Mb

22" widescreen samsung syncmaster... $350 cdn + tax from Memory Express in Calgary, Alberta. awesome screen, though if you were always designing tall things (like a rocket?) it might not be so special.

another interesting thing is that a 22" widescreen is the same physical height as a 19" non-widescreen. (just 3 or 4 inches wider.... res 1680x1050 vs 1280x1024)

$350. Wow I'm gonna have to burn down my local Future Shop.

To consider when you shop...

I tend to dock more toolbars vertically... also the command manager, I dock on the left vertical side. So a wide monitor works best for me. Plus the feature manager is on the left vertical side & it ain't dockable (yet).

Do get both monitors that match in size & resolution. Mine are mis-matched vertically & my mouse sometimes gets "stuck" in the lower inside corner of my tall monitor.

But I have no specific reccommendations for you.

Here at work it's a 19" LG sumtin sumtin....not bad, love

I use this Gateway FPD2185 21" widescreen--awesome:

If you go with an LCD, there are lots of things to consider. A big one is that darker colors (grays) tend to wash into the same indistinguishable color on monitors of less quality. I went from a ViewSonic 21" CRT with amazing color clarity to this one with great hesitation because of this display issue. But in checking the Gateway "in person", I found this treats color very well (important because of all the rendering/animating I do--need to nail the color on this stuff, and not lose detail in the shadows).

Also, with this monitor, if you're designing rockets it would work great. Just rotate the screen 90* and it figures it out. Plus there are all sorts of connections in the back and I think it's supposed to work with Vista (if you ever make the mistake of upgrading in the near future) because of the HDMI technology (or something like that). I use the DVI cable with my machine--super clear.

Read the reviews--and find more current ones than what I posted above. You'll then make the best choice for your particular needs. Dell has killer deals on their stuff right now, but good luck getting a good look at one of their displays before buying (I highly recommend looking at a real monitor before making a purchase).

Reason trumps all. And awe transcends reason.

I have (2) 19" Viewsonic displays - Model #VX924.
One is for SW, the other is for "other tasks".
(I tried SW across both monitors and did not like the results)
I believe that this is a sufficient size and a good "bang for your buck" type deal, but then I am not designing rockets either.
For me good qualty was a little more important size
(where have I heard this before??)

As a company we go for Acer 24” as the main and Acer 19” as a second screen.

They may not be the absolute best but unless you have a really keen eye it is hard to tell the difference, I certainly cannot.

Despite having UPS backup we did have one “blow” in a thunderstorm (it may have been coincidence) and they replaced it next day, no questions asked. Delivery is always very good as well, two days is the longest we have waited.

For price and service they are second to none IMO.
